Covid-Pandemic Not Likely to Pass Away Soon, New Variants Will Be More Dangerous: WHO

World Health Organization (WHO) has once again shown grave concern regarding the possible lingering of Covid-19 pandemic with emergence of more deadly variants.

The Emergency committee has noted that the Covid pandemic is nowhere near finished despite national, regional and global efforts. Also, the virus has managed to evolve with four new variants which evade the global epidemiology. The committee further recognized the reemergence of global spread with more powerful and difficult to control variants of coronavirus.

The WHO chief said that the world may be in the initial stage of third wave as the new cases of Delta variants continuously rise in numbers.

The committee has unanimously accepted that Covid-19 pandemic is still a public health emergency of international concern and emphasized on accelerating vaccination rate. It has requested to support the WHO's call for vaccination and provide vaccine at least to 10% population of every country by September, 2021.

Notably, there are news of slow but steady rises in new cases of Delta variants around the world. In India, the Manipur government has ordered a fresh lockdown from 18 July for ten days seeing the rise in the cases of Delta variants.

It was the eighth meeting of the International Health Regulation (2005) Emergency committee regarding the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) Pandemic, by the WHO. The meeting took place on Wednesday, 14 July 2021 from 11:30 to 16:00 Geneva Time (CEST).
