Communication is a process of transferring ideas, thoughts, opinions from one person to another. The word 'communication' is derived from the Latin word 'communicare' or 'communico', both of which mean 'to maker common'.
Different scholars have tried to define it. Claude Shannon writes it as one mind affecting another. This leads us to believe that Shannon sees communication as a process of the civilized. But let us not forget that even when humans were homo sapiens they had a limited system of communication with a little scope.
Communication thus is no privilege of well civilized human society but essential to the cycle of nature.
Oxford Dictionary defines communication as the transfer or conveying of meaning. To broaden the definition the transfer should not confuse or mislead. Further the desired objective must be fulfilled. Miscommunication could create misunderstanding.
Charles Osgood takes communication as a system. 'One system influences another' he defined. For example, when a prime minister appeals to the people to act on some issues such as prevention of plastics, he/she is trying to improve the existing system of plastic disposal.
For Wilber Schramm communication is a mechanism through which human relations exist and develop. Simply put it talks about the interdependence of humans. The evolved society has many layers of every day dealings such as public services, jobs, education, entertainment etc. Correct communication can help build a faithful bond among people which is extremely important for the growth of good relationship.
Now in the most simple terms ' communication is a process of sharing or exchange of ideas, information, knowledge, attitude or feeling among two or more persons through certain signs and symbols. Another simple definitions is sharing of experiences on the basis of commonness.
Further more communication is the way we connect to other people. Failure to express properly has led to many a conflict. Westely and Maclean say that communication does not start when a person starts to talk but rather when there is a selective response from the opposite person.
